Planning a Landscape Lighting Project in Sonoma County: Where to Start

Planning a Landscape Lighting Project in Sonoma County: Where to Start

Most people think about their landscape in daylight. That’s when you notice the plants, the patio, the view. But for a big part of the year, especially from fall through early spring, you’re coming home in the dark. Good landscape lighting changes how your property looks and works after the sun goes down.

Start with a walk at night

Before you call anyone, walk your property after dark. Pay attention to where you actually go: the path from the driveway to the front door, the steps down to the patio, the side gate you use to take out the bins. Those are the places where lighting does the most for safety, and they’re easy to overlook during the day.

Then look for the things you’d like to see: a big oak, a stone wall, a planting bed you’re proud of, the outline of the house itself. Lighting can turn a yard that disappears at night into one you can enjoy from inside or out.

It also helps to think about how you use the space. Do you entertain out back on summer evenings? Do guests park on the street and walk up? Is there a pool or fire pit area that gets used after dark? The answers shape where light needs to go and how bright it should be.

Plan it with the rest of the landscape

Lighting works best when it’s part of the overall design, not added as an afterthought. Step and wall lights can be built into hardscape while it’s being installed, which is far easier than retrofitting them into finished stone or concrete. Wiring can be run before beds are planted. Fixtures near plantings need to account for how those plants will fill in over the next few years, so a light that looks right today isn’t buried in a shrub two seasons from now.

That’s why we start every project by understanding what you actually need, not just what you asked for. Sometimes the most useful thing we do is point out the dark corner nobody noticed until it was dark.

Why we use FX Luminaire low-voltage LED

At Scott Anderson Landscaping, we install FX Luminaire lighting systems. FX Luminaire is one of the most respected names in landscape lighting, and we use it because we want systems that hold up and keep looking good for years.

Our installations are low-voltage LED. Low-voltage systems are safer to work with around landscapes, and LEDs use far less electricity than older bulb types while lasting much longer. That means fewer burned-out lights to replace and lower operating costs over the life of the system.

The systems we install also run on smart controllers. Instead of fiddling with a timer box in the side yard every time the season changes, your lighting can be scheduled and adjusted much more easily. It’s the kind of convenience you stop thinking about once it’s in, which is exactly the point.

Already have lighting? Consider a retrofit

Not every lighting project starts from scratch. A lot of properties around Sonoma and Napa already have landscape lighting that was installed years ago. Maybe some fixtures have stopped working, the light looks dim or yellowed, or the system just doesn’t match the landscape anymore.

We do lighting retrofits, updating existing systems to modern LED and smart control. A retrofit can give you the benefits of a new system while working with what’s already there. If you’re not sure whether your current setup is worth updating, that’s a good conversation to have with us.
